Cultural Considerations in Spiritual Assessment: A Reflection on Chinese and Native American Cultural Values

Exploration of spirituality and spiritual assessment within healthcare has been primarily undertaken within a Western context. This chapter will explore the importance of considering the impact of culture, ethnicity and indigenous beliefs when undertaking any form of spiritual assessment. The chapter will explore the importance of cultural sensitivity and attitudes adopted by healthcare professionals who provide spiritual assessment for patients, especially for those from different cultural backgrounds, to provide culturally competent care to improve the patient’s spiritual well-being. This chapter will explore the cultural care theory and introduce the cultural worldviews of people from Chinese and Canadian indigenous peoples to illustrate the importance of sensitivity and cultural care.
