Cognitive Dynamics of Theory of Mind in Collaborative Problem-Solving: A Framework for Understanding Teamwork in Complex Environments

The intricate interplay between Theory of Mind (ToM) and Collaborative Problem-Solving (CPS) is a critical but underexplored area of research for understanding and enhancing teamwork across diverse and complex contexts. We argue that ToM, the ability to understand the thoughts and intentions of others, is fundamental to effective collaboration and problem-solving. This paper discusses a framework for studying ToM in collaborative problem-solving, focusing on its role in complex environments characterized by information overload, uncertainty, time pressure, and adaptability demands. We explore how teams manage these challenges while utilizing ToM to stay coordinated and achieve shared goals. We emphasize the significance of social perceptiveness and accurate mental model formation in enhancing communication and decision-making processes in teams. Furthermore, the paper examines the potential role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in supporting and augmenting human ToM processes within teams through scaffolding social cognitive processes to improve collaborative outcomes. We discuss the potential benefits of AI in facilitating communication, information analysis, and mental model reconstruction, and providing recommendations for the study of AI integration during CPS. By investigating the interplay between ToM, CPS, and AI in complex environments, this paper aims to contribute to our understanding of effective teamwork dynamics and provide insights for future research and practical applications.
