From Designer to Imagineer: Personal Fabrication Embedded in Designer’s 3D Printing Practice

According to 3D printing technology is increasingly adopted in fields of fashion, jewelry, and exhibitions, the work of 3D printing is no longer limited to toys, figures, and other desktop-level products. With steadily expanding of application areas of additive manufacturing of large-scale applications, such as more than 6 m’ high outdoor sculptures with steel structures, are winning attention from the industry. Industry need more 3D printing designers who could design and conduct large-scale 3D printing projects, but the research on designer’s personal fabrication in large-scale 3D printing is limited. Taking Xuberance’s designers experience in large-scale additive manufacturing as a case study, this paper presents a changing pattern of interactive computing in the digital fabrication of large-scale addictive manufacturing. We find that personal fabrication pattern of 3D printing designer changes when the product size shifts from small to large. The research explore that digital fabrication is not the whole map of designers’ 3D printing practice. And the whole manufacturing process includes not only onsite design but also re-mote manufacturing. It help the researcher to image more re-mote additive manufacturing scenario, imaging that 3D printing machines work on Mars directed by the 3D printing imagineers work on Earth together to build a Mars Migration Project in one day. Also, It could leading to explore embodied intelligence in the field of additive manufacturing in future.
