Blood flow through the two umbilical arteries and the umbilical vein, which originate from mesodermal and ectodermal angiogenic cells, begins by the fifth week of gestation (Balcerzak et al. 2022). The two umbilical arteries and common iliac arteries arise from the dorsal aorta (Spurway et al. 2012; Balcerzak et al. 2022). Their proximal portions develop into the internal iliac and superior vesical arteries inside the pelvis, and their distal portions obliterate to form the medial umbilical ligaments coursing on the deep side of the anterior abdominal wall (Spurway et al. 2012).
