During week three of development, the arterial and venous systems are established via differentiation of the mesoderm. The arterial system is comprised of paired dorsal aortae, which branches to form two umbilical arteries and a dorsal intersegmental artery during the beginning of the fourth week of development (Tamisier et al. 1990). Shortly after, the umbilical arteries anastomose with the dorsal intersegmental artery to form the dominant placental-aortic connection, which becomes the common and internal iliac arteries after birth. The sciatic and external iliac arteries branch from this umbilical-dorsal anastomosis at the end of week 4 of fetal development. Between weeks 4 and 6, the sciatic artery is the primary blood supply to the developing lower limbs (Tamisier et al. 1990). After week 6, the external iliac artery and its branches fully develop and become the main blood supply to the lower limbs, causing the sciatic artery to regress.
