During the 4 mm stage of development between the 4th and 5th weeks of embryogenesis, paired dorsal aortae fuse craniocaudally to form the abdominal aorta (White et al. 2015). Simultaneously, the paired 10th vitelline segmental arteries supplying the primitive gut extend anteriorly between the level of the lower border of T12 and the upper border of L1 and fuse to form the celiac trunk (White et al. 2015). Segmental aortic fusion typically continues for approximately 1–2 cm before trifurcating to form the left gastric, common hepatic, and splenic arteries responsible for supplying blood to the primitive gut and subsequent foregut structures (Hazirolan et al. 2009; Mahajan et al. 2018).
