Effect of Nb/Cr on Microstructure and Microhardness of Ti-Al Matrix Fabricated via Laser In-Situ Alloying

The increasing needs for advanced and high-performance materials for engineering applications have triggered the development of intermetallics. When compared to alternative fabrication techniques, the development of titanium aluminides (Ti-Al) based alloys using laser in-situ alloying manufacture offers appealing features. The objective of this study is to examine how the alloying elements niobium (Nb) and chromium (Cr) influence the microstructural evolution and microhardness properties of ternary Ti-Al-Nb and Ti-Al-Cr alloys made using laser in-situ alloying technology. The findings also show that the addition of Nb and Cr to the Ti-Al matrix enhanced the microhardness characteristics through grain refinement.
