The interplay between Indian Summer MonsoonIndian Summer Monsoon (ISM), Winter Monsoon and WesterliesWesterlies determines the glaciation in Himalaya, but local meteorological factors and topographic variations in the mountainous region serve as an effective tool in spatio-temporal variation in the glaciers. Overall, interrelationship between atmospheric circulations at Himalaya, Western Ghats and Tibetan PlateauTibetan plateau and oceanic circulations at Indian Ocean, Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal are instrumental in shaping the climate of the subcontinent. The western HimalayaWestern Himalaya, particularly Ladakh, Zanskar and Karakoram, has been influenced in past by the Western Disturbance and changes in the driving tool in future shall significantly impress the glaciation of Karakoram-Hindu KushHindu kush Himalaya region. The rise in the intensity of precipitation associated with Western DisturbancesWestern disturbances in Karakoram Mountain by 10.17% with high percentage of snowfall amounting to 64.5% in recent decades is a testimony to it. The large variation in temperature in High Himalaya and trans-Himalaya is due to the local topography of the sites that dictates different thermodynamical and orographic forcings at various locations in the mountain. As such, differential rates of warming are noticed across Himalaya, 0.6 °C/decade over Nepal between 1977 and 2002, 0.2 °C/decade over entire northeast India between 1971 and 2005, 0.16 °C/decade over north-western Himalayas, 0.23–0.43 °C/decade over western Himalayas and 0.27–0.54 °C/decade over Pakistan Himalayas.
