Thyroid nodules are common (up to 65% in autopsy data) and usually benign (up to 74%). These may be identified incidentally during imaging performed for another reason or during a physical examination. Incidence increases with age. The examinee should be familiar with the initial identification, workup of, and management of both benign and malignant thyroid nodules.
