Meckel’s diverticulum is a common congenital abnormality of the gastrointestinal tract and is a remnant of the omphalomesenteric duct. This true diverticulum can contain pancreatic or gastric tissue. It can cause inflammation, hemorrhage, or obstruction, and diagnosis can be made using a Technetium-99 m scan or an ultrasound. Surgical intervention is warranted when a Meckel’s diverticulum is found and can include a diverticulectomy or a bowel resection.
