Colonic volvulus can cause a large bowel obstruction, most often in the sigmoid colon or cecum. Diagnosis is made based on symptoms and diagnostic studies such as X-rays and CT scans. Treatment of a volvulus depends on its location. A sigmoid volvulus can be temporized using endoscopy but needs surgical management. A cecal volvulus must be managed with an operation.
