The production and consumption of plastics is closely related to the prosperity, but also the calamities of the modern socioeconomic system in terms of the generation of excessive waste. And cities have been considered the primary origin of plastic contamination of all land and marine ecosystems. In response, different stakeholders at a global and local level have used diverse images and narratives to create scenarios of the future to illustrate the long-term consequences of plastic pollution, but also strategies of mitigation and adaptation. In this chapter we explore some of the main contributions, following the conceptual distinction between foresight, forecast, and anticipation in contemporary futures studies. We are particularly interested in narratives related to long-term efforts to radically reduce plastic pollution in urban contexts, also called zero plastics futures, and their influence on international regulatory efforts to cope with this challenge. In the last section we develop some elements for a fundamental approach to conceive the urban plastic economy as an anticipatory system to achieve a deeper understanding on the characteristics of the role of urban anticipatory communities. We use a brief overview of important advances in narratives of regulation for the mitigation of plastics on a national and city level in Mexico, with particular emphasis on the relation to zero plastics.
