Measures of Central Tendency

This chapter provides an introduction to the various measures of central tendency, essential tools in statistical analysis for summarising a dataset by identifying a central point. The primary measures discussed are the mean, median, mode, and mid-range, each of which provides different insights into the data’s central value. The mean offers an arithmetic average, useful in symmetric distributions but sensitive to outliers. The median, more robust against extreme values, is preferable for skewed data. The mode is useful for categorical data, highlighting the most frequent value. The mid-range, a less common measure, focusses on the average of the extremes. The chapter further explores when to use each measure, considering factors such as data distribution, outliers, and the nature of the data. Practical examples illustrate how the choice of central tendency can significantly affect the interpretation of data, particularly in skewed or categorical datasets.
