Solid renal masses can be malignant or benign, renal cell carcinoma (RCC) and àngiomyolipomas (AML) being the most common. Ultrasound (US) is able to distinguish cystic from solid renal masses, to assess the vascularization of the tumor and the presence of venous thrombus by the application of Doppler. The recent introduction of contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) has improved the application of US to differentiate the various subtypes of RCC and the distinction of benign lesions.
