The human penis is a superficial organ ideally suited to ultrasound imaging. With the improvements in the technology of ultrasonography, the ultrasound examination of the penis has become a functional morphic evaluation. Penile ultrasound should be performed using a high-frequency, linear probe. Ultrasound allows us to evaluate the corpora cavernosa, the corpus spongiosum, the fascial layers, the septum, and the vascular structures. The external portion of the penis can be examined through a dorsal, a ventral, or a lateral approach. The nonexternal portions of the corpora cavernosa and the proximal bulbous urethra are best examined through a transperineal approach. The sonographic appearance of various structures varies according to the degree of rigidity.
