The incidence of prostate cancer is still increasing mostly due to the introduction of PSA blood tests and the widespread use of ultrasound-guided prostate biopsy (PB). This one has evolved from the standard sextant biopsy method to more accurate PB schemes with the addition of more biopsies to areas not sampled by standard sextant schemes, configuring the concepts of extended and saturation biopsy. Nowadays, a random biopsy still represents the most important diagnostic tool to detect and characterize prostate cancer, leading to both new therapeutic and follow-up perspectives.

摘要

The incidence of prostate cancer is still increasing mostly due to the introduction of PSA blood tests and the widespread use of ultrasound-guided prostate biopsy (PB). This one has evolved from the standard sextant biopsy method to more accurate PB schemes with the addition of more biopsies to areas not sampled by standard sextant schemes, configuring the concepts of extended and saturation biopsy. Nowadays, a random biopsy still represents the most important diagnostic tool to detect and characterize prostate cancer, leading to both new therapeutic and follow-up perspectives.
