The photographs in this book illustrate most of the viruses that I have “encountered”, whether in the context of research or diagnostic activities performed in my laboratory, even if electron microscopy is now much less used than it was 20 years ago to diagnose viral infections. Indeed, electron microscopy played a major role in the discovery of many viruses and in the diagnosis of related diseases, before being gradually replaced by molecular techniques.
