Panel 60. Coronaviruses are enveloped viruses, about 1/10000th of a millimeter in diameter, with a capsid of helical symmetry surrounding a large RNA genome. They get their name from their appearance under electron microscopy, as they seem to be surrounded by a crown (corona meaning crown in Latin). This crown is due to particularly protruding envelope proteins exposed on the surface of these viruses.
