Panel 59. Hantaviruses are enveloped RNA viruses named after the Hantaan River, which separates North and South Korea. These viruses were indeed responsible for hemorrhagic fevers associated with renal diseases in American soldiers during the Korean War, between 1951 and 1954. However, it took more than 20 years before the virus was identified in small rodents in this region.
