Panel 38. These photographs of cells infected by the rabies virus show the virus budding at the plasma membrane of these cells. The bullet-shaped matrix is surrounded by a viral envelope. This viral envelope is made up of a part of the plasma membrane borrowed from the host cell, in which the viral envelope proteins are embedded. These envelope proteins give, here also, a crenellated appearance of the viral surface. As these are cell sections, the bullet-like aspect is well visualized when the virus is cut lengthwise; the virus appears circular when cut transversely.

摘要
