HIV induced syncytium

Panel 33. A syncytium is a cell formed by the fusion of several cells that share their cytoplasm, but retain their individualized nuclei. The result is a giant cell with multiple nuclei, i.e. a “multi-nucleated” cell. This mechanism exists physiologically to generate multi-nucleated cells of the placenta, bone marrow, or muscle fiber. In the case of HIV, this phenomenon is pathological.
