Panel 2. Viruses and bacteria are the two main players in the world of microbes, which can be defined as microorganisms responsible for infectious diseases (knowing that not all microorganisms are pathogens). Diseases as diverse as plague, cholera, syphilis or tuberculosis are caused by bacteria. Diseases like measles, rubella, chickenpox or AIDS are on the other hand caused by viruses. But what are the differences between these two main types of microbes?
