In this concluding chapter, we discuss atmospheric motions on the synoptic scale and mesoscale oceanic motions, both of which originate from baroclinic and barotropic instability mechanisms. We then focus on the main aspects of large-scale wind-driven ocean circulation, such as the Sverdrup balance and western boundary currents. We conclude by discussing some laboratory simulations of these currents, also in connection with potential climate changes.

摘要

In this concluding chapter, we discuss atmospheric motions on the synoptic scale and mesoscale oceanic motions, both of which originate from baroclinic and barotropic instability mechanisms. We then focus on the main aspects of large-scale wind-driven ocean circulation, such as the Sverdrup balance and western boundary currents. We conclude by discussing some laboratory simulations of these currents, also in connection with potential climate changes.
