Similarly to what happens in the planetary boundary layer, in the surface and bottom oceanic boundary layers, turbulent viscosity plays a fundamental role. This chapter analyses the ageostrophic currents present in these two boundary layers. In addition, the mechanisms through which surface ageostrophic currents indirectly generate geostrophic currents, both in the presence of a coast and in the open sea, are analyzed.
