The barotropic hypothesis implies the independence of geostrophic flows from the vertical coordinate. However, geostrophic winds at mid latitudes exhibit a strong dependence on altitude and, similarly, geostrophic currents in the oceans generally depend significantly on depth. To describe this behaviour, in this chapter we consider baroclinic geostrophic flows. The resulting thermal wind relationship explains the experimental observations.
