This chapter starts from reviewing a primitive question “What is the dressed photon (DP)?” Fifteen novel phenomena originating from the DP are presented to support this review. They are complimentary to common views that have been accepted in conventional optical science. Next, the long history of the DP studies is reviewed that originated from the studies on optical near fields. This review includes the reasons why the name “optical near field”  has been changed to “dressed photon”. Portions of Chap. 1 have been reproduced from Ref.
