This paper discusses the experiences of constructing secant pile walls for three deep excavation sites. Basic guidelines to assist good construction practices for a fully functional secant pile wall to retain deep excavations are highlighted based on these experiences. Secant pile walls can be erected to support the vertical excavation for preparing rectangular pits for basements or circular or elliptic enclosures for supply or hoisting shafts. A secant pile wall is formed by constructing alternate reinforced concrete piles and plain concrete piles intersecting each other. In some cases, all the piles are reinforced. This article discusses the use of secant pile walls and the risk of not using this system. It also focuses on the challenges during the construction of secant pile walls using adequate segmental casings. The experiences of with and without a secant piling system for deep excavation are also presented. Based on the learnings, the suggested guidelines to ease the construction of secant piles with suitable segmental casings are presented.
