Black cotton soil is a challenging soil type for foundation design, with low strength, low bearing capacity, and high shrink-swell potential. To address these issues, engineers have traditionally used soil stabilization methods involving additives or mechanical means. This study focuses on the use of polymers as an affordable, and environmentally safe soil stabilizer as it has a lower carbon footprint compared to cement. The research involved conducting experiments with the addition of 2 and 4% polymer content in the soil. The decision to focus on 2 and 4% while excluding 3% has been based on practical constraints, previous knowledge, and preliminary results. Results showed that the use of polymers substantially improved the soil's engineering properties. The findings suggest that polymers can be an affordable and effective solution for stabilizing black cotton soil and enhancing its load bearing capacity for foundation design.
