Application of Monitoring Devices in Ground Improvement Techniques

Modern era is a construction era where soft grounds are engineered to support structures. Mega civil engineering projects have become a norm to fulfill infrastructure requirements. Large Construction activities on soft marine soil due to poor soil condition are a major challenge to civil engineers. Ground improvement techniques are increasingly important to the enhancement of poor ground condition by altering soil properties suiting engineering requirements and thus facilitating infrastructural growth. Depending on the soil strata, a suitable ground improvement technique is selected. With culmination of ground strengthening, improvement in soil properties is verified by a precise instrumentation scheme for validation and confirmation of ground improvement campaign. Instrumentation scheme is a part of quality assurance and quality control program in geotechnical work. Prefabricated Vertical Drains (PVDs) is a well-known technique in which vertical drains shorten the drainage path to accelerate the consolidation of soil. In the present study, the degree of consolidation is monitored by installation of settlement plate and piezometers. Further, inclinometers are installed to monitor stability of surcharge/embankments. Reduction in pore pressures due to installation of PVD is monitored with piezometers. Ground settlement through settlement plate observations is recorded by the total station. This paper pertains to a case study of a project in southern India. The sub-strata comprised 0–18 m depth of soft clay/silty with stray pervious lenses. SPT N values for this layer ranged from 0 to 5, indicating very soft and compressible strata requiring pre-consolidation measures. This layer was followed by stiff clay/silt up to about 34–35 m (SPT N ranging between 16 and 35), which was underlain by dense sand strata (N > 45) extending beyond depth of investigation of 60 m. Construction methodology of PVD, surcharge laying, their sequence and monitoring of consolidation settlement, assessing degree of consolidation by Asaoka analysis forms part of this paper.
