Performance of Oil Storage Tank Foundations: A Case History

Foundation for storage tanks resting over weak soil deposits is a challenging task for practicing geotechnical engineers. Generally, oil storage depots are constructed near to the shoreline for facilitating easy transportation of crude oil and petroleum products. Coastal deposits usually comprise of silts/clays mixed with sand. The weak soils may be in the form of reclaimed soil deposit or soft clay deposits or probably residual deposits arising out of weathering of volcanic rocks. The current study presents optimal foundation solution for oil storage tanks where soft silty clay/clayey silt is encountered. Extensive soil investigation using CPT is employed to characterize the subsoil conditions. Ground improvement using vibro stone columns is chosen based on the encountered soil properties, loading intensity, and to satisfy performance criteria. Initial and routine load tests are conducted to verify the performance of installed stone columns. Subsequently, the tanks are constructed and hydrotests are carried out to demonstrate the efficacy of ground improvement. The observed settlements during hydrotest of tanks are matched with the predicted settlements which confirmed accuracy of soil characteristics assumed for design stage. This ensured vibro stone columns are effectively installed achieving the performance criteria.
