Field Performance of PVD to Improve Soft Clay Beneath the High Railway Embankment in Bangladesh

This study demonstrates the use of a soft clay improvement technique utilizing prefabricated vertical drains (PVD) with staged loading beneath a high railway embankment in Bangladesh. The railway embankment is 5–13 m in height, with a 2 m stability berm on each side, and fixed crest width of 6.850 m. The railway alignment passes through areas with fish culture ponds and paddy fields, which have soft subsoil. The thickness of soft clay beneath the embankment is more than 10–25 m. But, the PVDs are installed in a triangular pattern with 2.5 m center-to-center spacing, penetrating the soft clay to a depth of 7.5 m. Field monitoring of settlement over time is conducted to evaluate the performance of the technique. The study also compares the settlement of the embankment with the design output and identifies possible reasons for any discrepancies. The stability if the embankment will be evaluated through post-construction geotechnical investigation campaigns.
