Communicating Climate Change Risks Across Cultures and Languages
摘要
Climate change is a global issue that urgently requires communication strategies capable of raising public awareness and mobilizing it collectively. However, while new technologies enable a variety of ways to disseminate information, with countless implications and pragmatic decisions for audiences around the world, cross-cultural communication poses a key challenge to the success of climate change messages. The purpose of this article is to illustrate why effective communication is crucial to effectively communicating the risks of climate change, and thereby explore the complexity of intercultural communication and its interdisciplinary dimensions. Then, based on preliminary considerations that also serve as a literature review, we describe the challenges of communicating climate change adaptation and mitigation information, which requires a multifaceted and ethical approach to effective communication. As the case studies will show, intercultural communication for climate change in times of climate crisis requires both theoretical knowledge and professional competences in various fields such as psychology, communication and translation. With existing demographic and cultural diversity brought to the fore by new technologies, what can we do to overcome communication barriers and help our audiences gain the best possible understanding of climate change in a rapidly changing world?
