Alphaviruses, such as Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus (VEEV), Ross River virus (RRV), and chikungunya virus (CHIKV), can cause significant outbreaks throughout the world. It’s important to note that Eastern equine encephalitis virus (EEEV), Western equine encephalitis virus (WEEV), and VEEV have the highest potential to be weaponized because they can spread through the air. Although some alphaviral diseases are not well-studied in humans or their spillover to humans is yet to be discovered, they should be closely monitored. These infectionsInfections can cause long-term neurological problems, are often misdiagnosed due to generic symptoms, and may lead to coinfection with pathogens, including Zika virus (ZIKV), dengue viruses, and yellow fever virus. The use of cellular and molecular assays, along with animal models, helps in understanding disease pathogenesis and diagnosis. Mosquito control can be an effective way to reduce the spread of many diseases that affect humans. However, prevention is key to long-term protection. Vaccine development is in the preclinical stage, and more effort is required to provide adequate long-term protection against highly pathogenic viruses.
