Bird-of-Paradise (Strelitzia reginae Banks) Breeding and Biotechnology

Bird-of-paradiseBird-of-paradise, also known as strelitziaStrelitzia, common names of genus StrelitziaStrelitzia, a subtropical species native to southern Africa, belongs to the family StrelitziaceaeStrelitziaceae. This family comprises three genera (Phenakospermum, Ravenala, and StrelitziaStrelitzia) and seven species: Phenakospermum guyannense, Ravenala madagascariensis, Strelitzia reginae (), S. nicolai (), S. juncea (), S. alba (), and S. caudata () mostly used for garden purposes. Among them, Strelitzia reginae () holds considerable commercial value and finds extensive usage not only in gardens but also in cut flower production. Despite the economic significance of various StrelitziaStrelitzia species, most research studies have predominantly centered on phylogeny and botanical classification, or postharvest techniques for S. reginae (). Presently, there is no an established breeding or selection program for bird-of-paradiseBird-of-paradise plants, and detailed descriptions for certain recognized varieties of S. reginae () are yet to be fully elucidated. While some studies have been conducted, particularly in in vitro propagationIn vitro propagation as a potential alternative for seedling production, the process of in vitro multiplicationIn vitro multiplication has not yet been successfully established due to the absence of a standardized protocol. Therefore, there is a significant need for further research on this species to address many knowledge gaps. In this chapter, a comprehensive review of research findings over time is presented, encompassing all these aspects to provide a thorough understanding of the subject matter. Considering the available publications, research involving some technique used in breeding programs and biotechnology for other species, such as plant transformation, has not been identified. Expanding upon these themes, future research could explore enhancing breeding programs, refining tissue cultureTissue culture techniques, and a precise cultivars identification.
