Carmelo Bene (1937–2002) is among the towering figures of world cinema but, although he has been revered by Italian cultural heroes including Pier Paolo Pasolini and Marco Bellocchio, Bene’s audio-visual work in film and television has been little seen, distributed or discussed in the English-speaking world. This chapter outlines the films Bene made between Our Lady of the Turks in 1968 and One Hamlet Less in 1973. As an artist, he aimed to release the maximum energy and intensity, while decrying conventionally “significant” content. He was simultaneously steeped in tradition, and an avant-garde iconoclast.
