The Enemy on the Left: The Construction of the “Evil Communist” in Brazilian Far-Right Discourse
摘要
This study investigates the evolution of conservative discourse since the era of the military dictatorship, notably the 1964 coup, which introduced principles of nationalism and anti-communism. By examining the resurgence of these ideas through the lens of digital text analysis, we uncover echoes of an unresolved past. The study focuses on how these ideas regained prominence. Leveraging digital text analysis via Voyant Tools, insights are derived from various sources including Ustra's “A Verdade Sufocada,” Olavo de Carvalho’s bestseller, and Bolsonaro's speeches. This investigation carefully dissects terms such as “communist,” “communism,” “leftism,” “left-wing,” and “terrorism” to uncover nuanced semantic shifts. The pervasive presence of anti-communism across sources suggests that cross-referencing data can shed light on the persistence of these enduring beliefs.
