Populism as a Communication Phenomenon in Portugal: The Dimensions of the Other
摘要
This article aims to take stock of the dimensions that have led to the expansion of populist ideas in Portugal, in particular the identification of an Other, expressed in many forms of otherness. The timeline covered by this exploratory essay begins with the creation of the Chega party [Enough], in April 2019. Based on the assumption that there is a popular/populist style (Moffitt and Tormey, Political Studies 62:381–397, 2013) in Portuguese politics, present in the Salazar dictatorship (1928–1974) and in democracy (1974–2023), three main dimensions are identified: a historical/cultural dimension; a media dimension; and a political dimension. In the context of the growing fragmentation of the political landscape, alongside the recent strengthening of the far-right party Chega, the Other continues to be, always, an element that defines Us.
