While the The Old Law is not overtly interested in clocks and calendars, it provides an important meditation on temporality by locating chronometry in the body itself. In this dystopian narrative, where all women over the age of 60 and all men over the age of 80 are put to death, Middleton explores the effects of a hegemonic temporality, through the invention of a non-polytemporal world, where temporality is imposed upon individuals by a powerful state. Throughout the book, I argue that this world was approaching, as clocks and calendars were becoming more hegemonic, but universal modern time was not yet in place while Middleton was writing. The play imagines what that world might be like in order to criticize the emerging temporal regime. I conclude by suggesting that we currently occupy this temporal space, making Middleton’s play a dystopian narrative, warning about the effects of hegemonic time.
