When a patient is diagnosed with cancer, it is an overwhelming experience. There are a multitude of appointments, tests, consults, and treatments that the patient and family experience to achieve the best outcome. This chapter, through case study examples, highlights the role of the oncology nurse navigator (ONN) in helping patients navigate the complex healthcare system and decrease barriers to care. The role of the ONN is multidimensional. They are the constant point of contact for the patient and family throughout the cancer continuum. ONNs serve as advocates for patients and families providing education on their disease, including diagnostic testing, treatment options, side effect management, and resources. They facilitate multidisciplinary communication, provide support, and help connect patients with community resources.
