In this chapter we will embark on another journey into the world of modern physics, namely that of quantum physics whose foundations and principles are even more counter-intuitive and far from common sense than the theory of Relativity. Starting from 1900, the year in which quantum physics was born, we will go through the most important stages up to the results of the theory of the standard model of particles and fundamental interactions. We have no pretense of being able to communicate clearly and exhaustively the foundations of quantum physics without leaving any doubt or astonishment in the reader. After all, as one of the founding fathers of quantum physics Niels Bohr said: “Those who are not shocked the first time they come across quantum mechanics cannot have understood it”.
