In September 1900, one of the most authoritative physicists of the time, William Thomson, better known as Lord Kelvin, at the assembly of the British Association for the Advancement of Science, in Bradford, pronounced the following phrase: “There is nothing new to discover in physics anymore. All that remains to be done are ever more precise measurements”. And it is precisely from some of the measurements to which Kelvin was referring that the theories of Relativity and quantum physics were born, which together with the infinitesimal calculus developed by Isaac Newton and Gottfried Leibniz about two centuries earlier, can be considered among the highest peaks conquered by human intellect. This chapter is dedicated to Einstein’s theory of Relativity, considered one of the greatest masterpieces of physics.
