Enhanced recovery protocols have become extensively used not only in colorectal surgery but in all surgical specialties. This single institutional study presents a group of patients who underwent a then novel approach in their perioperative management referred to as fast-track, a name that has now become obsolete. Most of the patients underwent complex open procedures and while the interventions described are far away from modern enhanced recovery protocols the advantages associated with a fast-track approach were immediately visible.
