In lymphoedema and LiDo, lymph flow and symptoms can be changed for the better by a balanced and appropriate diet. Convenience food is unfavourable (inconvenient) for the lymph flow. A ketogenic, protein-optimized diet can reduce hyperinsulinaemia and obesity-related inflammation. Besides, obesity and inflammation also increase oedema. Food with a high glycaemic index should be avoided as strictly and persistently as possible. Reduction of meal frequency, especially avoiding frequent snacks in between, always leading to increase in glucose and insulin, is as important as an efficient protein-based satiety. Satiating effects of proteins are stronger and lasting for longer than those of other nutrients. A protein-optimized ketogenic diet combined with intermittent fasting is particularly suitable for patients with lymphatic diseases such as lymphoedema and lipohyperplasia dolorosa. In over 80% of patients with LiDo, the typical complaints such as feelings of tension, tendency to oedema, and often tenderness and sensitivity, too, are improved by a ketogenic protein-optimized diet, so that therapy measures can often be reduced. Nevertheless, on returning to a high-carb diet, the clinical symptoms of LiDo return. Therefore, a permanent change in diet with occasional exceptions is desirable.
