Indirect Indocyanine Green Lymphangiography (ICGL) in Lymphology: Especially in Surgical Lymphology

For diagnosis and therapy, imaging methods for lymph vessels are indispensable in practical lymphological everyday life; however, they have been reliably available for only a few years, albeit not comprehensively. The method of fluorescence is simple to perform, can be used on an outpatient basis without effort, and is low in complications and side effects. In addition to high-resolution lymph vessel sonography, it represents an important development in recent years. Indocyanine green lymphography (ICGL) can be used as a diagnostic test when there is suspicion of lymphedema. Dermal backflow patterns provide information about the progression of lymph stasis. In lymph vessel surgery, ICGL is used for exactly representing lymph vessels in vivo and for surgical planning. Its main limitation is its low penetration depth—a disadvantage that lymph vessel sonography can partly equalize. Imaging diagnostics are significantly improved by the application of both methods.
