In this retrospective, I interrogate certain minutiae of performing practices of place in projects across the UK. Expanding on earlier ideas of anatopic performance practices of homescapes (Mackey 2020), here the epigenetic is positioned as a way of rethinking such practices, increasing an understanding of performing places of home. As part of this process, lacunae in former considerations of anatopic practices are addressed. This repositioning uses several performing place projects I have led over 25 years as the source for interrogation. Previously unrecognised voices—those of the facilitator practitioners—are foregrounded as foundations for rethinking this work. In doing this, the geographical siting of such performance practice increases in importance in unfamiliar ways. First, I suggest that the precariousness of sites leads to exciting, risky, precarious practices such that public participants engage in their homescapes unusually yet with ease. Second, whilst sometimes perceived as relegating the arts but with responsibility for homes and sites in their areas, UK local ‘governance’ collaboration in such work is found to be critical yet currently endangered in the UK because of funding. Threading thinking around epigenesis throughout, these areas of discussion coalesce in rethinking aspects of performing homescapes.
