Joshua D. Angrist is the Ford Professor of Economics at MIT and a recipient of the 2021 Nobel Prize in Economics. He has made several deep and lasting contributions to the fields of labour economics and applied econometrics, including: landmark studies on the effects of schooling and experience on earnings; the causal interpretation of instrumental variable and regression estimates; and the effectiveness of different public schooling models. More broadly, Angrist’s work has helped change the course of applied microeconomic research by demonstrating the value of a clear research design and the power of natural experiments for drawing robust and transparent empirical conclusions. This chapter reviews these different contributions, as well as Angrist’s impact on modern econometric training with two influential textbooks and decades of thoughtful teaching and advising.
