Loosely stated, when averaged globally, the secular rise observed in sea surface temperature (SST) amounts to less than 1 °C per century. Depending upon where the observations may be examined, temperatures on land may be rising more rapidly than SST (or even falling); but, for the reasons stated in Chap.  1 , the SST is what really matters, as regards climate. By absorbing most of the incoming solar radiation, thereby determining the interactions that occur between the ocean and atmosphere, which result in both the ocean’s currents and the atmosphere’s winds, it is the SST, versus the land temperature, that sets the worldwide organization of climate and ecology.
