Dentine is the mineralised and highly sensitive tissue that constitutes the major bulk of the tooth. Dentine is present as an enclosed cylindrical wall around the central core of soft pulp tissue. Dentine is present in the crown and the root and opens at the root tip through a single foramen at the apex and, sometimes, through accessory canals. Dentine is deposited by specialised cells called odontoblasts. They cover the entire pulpal surface of the dentinal wall (◘ Fig. 8.1).
