The interpretation of histological and histopathological images in an atlas depends upon an observer’s fundamental knowledge and understanding of cell and tissue types. In the case of histopathology, an additional understanding of cell and tissue interactions in disease is important. In this chapter, a very abridged overview of normal cell and tissue types is presented to provide additional background to the sections of the book concerning oral histology and oral histopathology.
