Eckhardt and Neuhauser establish the materiality of John Selden’s library at Whitefriars in a chapter which maps this important space, physically on the edge of the inns of court. The chapter uses the hand-written library catalogue (now housed in the Bodleian library, Oxford) to reconstruct the organisation of Selden’s books and to draw meaning from this. The first section looks at Selden’s copy of John Donne’s Biathanatos, bound in a Sammelband with other texts, and the books which surrounded it in the library. From Donne and Lincoln’s Inn, the chapter then moves on to Thomas Coryate. Coryate’s Crudities contains ‘Panegyricke Verses’ from twenty-seven innsmen and directly engages their interest in travel and exploration. Again, Eckhardt and Neuhauser examine the volumes Selden has contiguous to the Crudities, and what inferences can be drawn from this arrangement.
